Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Motor Neurone Disease as its known here, is a neurodegenerative disease characterised by progressive weakening of the muscles, and difficulty in speaking, swallowing and breathing. Thats why we are pouring these buckets of ice water over our heads, to replicate the feeling of paralysis that we get when the water hits our skin. That feeling is what sufferers of ALS feel the majority of their short lives, and that is why it is so good to see not only money, but awareness as well, being raised to help the victims of this terrible disease.
