Thanks to Colin Mayer, class of 84 and an old mucker of mine, for directing me to this online shot of the School from the air, taken c 197o - click on the link to see it; then zoom in for detail - which, among much else, demonstrates our proximity to St Thomas Aquinas High School - reminding one darkly of just how fraught relations between pupils of the respective establishments used to be, to the point that JCS pupils living south of the railway used to proceed home over the Westland Drive bridge with about the same happy confidence as the Three Billygoats Gruff and, by 1979, forcing Mr Branston to retime the ending of the school day to minimise conflict... Among not a few of the many and real achievements of his successor, Alastair Cram, was rapidly normalising relations between the two school communities, to the point where for decades they have now contentedly shared dances, debates and so on; pitched battles in the streets and armed playground-invasions now seem as remote, and no less eccentric, as the belt, or teachers smoking shamelessly in corridors. panoramas.bzncl.tv/Gap74/Gap74-Jordanhill.html
