Thanks to Dave Glennie, for reminding me of this one. It relates to Daves activism. David Suzuki visited Port Hope in 1995 to address the concerns of removing low-level radiation sprinkled throughout a town into limestone caverns beneath Lake Ontario. Harold Digger Stevens, a long time member of the Port Hope Council was selling this angle in a big way. Dave and I attended the talk and at the conclusion of the night, Dave got in a very heated exchange with Digger. This man was ancient. But respect must be earned, and this guy was making decisions at the end of a life. The caverns never happened. And yes we are taught to respect our elders, but when our elders are wrong, speak in truths. It had to be voiced. That moment, in some strange way, continues to inspire me to speak up sometimes. We see a lot of injustice in this world. If youre feeling strong and solid, never hurts to take a stand.
