Thanks to James Sparling I have been listening to Sun Kil Moon almost exclusively these last few weeks. I just got my copy of BENJI in the mail. The songwriting redefines lyrical whimsy. Mark Kozelek is not hampered by structure - or rhyme scheme - or any type of boundaries. Much of what Kozolek and the band record - is just him telling a story with simple guitar - stripped down instrumentation - and plaintive voice. He may have reinvented the wheel. If not - he took it out for a good spin. (Got a bonus disc for buying ti direct from the label - Mark Kozelek Live. Good spring emerging music.)
