Thanks to John McBride for this profile update. Its a great read about his experience on SOE. John McBride. Basque Country. 1998 Originally I am from Draperstown, Co. Derry. Having lived in Edinburgh, Sydney and Toronto, Im currently living in Valencia, Spain. I went away on SOE to the Basque Country in 1998. I am currently working as an English teacher (TEFL). Taking part in the program made a huge difference to my life. Coming from a small village where most people are traditionally from the same community it was the first time I had a chance to really talk with people from the opposing background, without politics, sectarianism, etc, being a taboo issue. A year later I moved to Scotland for university ready for the challenge of meeting more new people from various backgrounds. Since then Ive travelled to around 30 countries and lived in 5 countries in 3 different continents so it definitely helped open my mind up to new cultures, ideas and people. Also, I remember a student from my school who had participated the previous year giving my year group a talk encouraging us to apply & thinking theres no way I could talk in front of so many people on my own. A year later I found myself giving a presentation in the same scenario and I knew that without the experience of SOE theres no way I could have done that. _______________________________________________________ John also managed the City Backpackers Hostel on Malone Avenue for a number of years. During this time he helped us host a number of international groups from Berlin, Malta, Sweden, Basque Country and Oldham, England.
