Thanks to Richard Law for passing on this story. Guinness Book of World Records? Did you know there is an attempt at a Bowls World Record taking place? The other afternoon, I had the very great pleasure of playing 10 ends of bowls with Frank Peniguel from Dalesford Victoria at my club of Waikerie. Frank is out to set the Guiness Book of World Records for the most Australian Bowling Clubs played in a twelve month period, and the Waikerie bowling club was number 553 on his journey around the nation. The criteria that must be met by Frank, is 10 ends of 4 bowls, if possible a marker be present, that there are two witnesses to the match and that a signed scorecard is produced. At the end of our match, Frank had completed 5,530 ends of bowls which equates to 22,120 bowls since January 2014. Incidentally, during the journey Frank has only put down 170 wrong biased bowls or .77%, if only we were so lucky. The thing that impressed me most about Frank, was his motivation behind doing the record attempt. Frank, like all of us can remember when our beautiful sport had so many more people playing the game, in fact 20 years ago our figures showed that there were 500,000 pennant playing members throughout Australia, current statistics indicate about 217,000. So in 20 years we have lost over half of our membership. With this in mind, Frank has set out to raise the profile of the sport by having a world record attached to it but Frank wants to challenge every bowler in the nation to replace themselves with two. Now you may be saying, where can I find two replacements, well in 2013, our census results show that 437,000 social, corporate and school participants, played our sport 4 or more times, so they are already in your club. It is pretty simple really, when you leave the sport, make sure there are two to replace you. Frank will complete his journey in January 2015, when he will finish with approximately 800 clubs played around our nation. Frank finishes on the Friday and has to play Pennant for Dalesford on the Saturday, I hope he has had enough practice. If your club is contacted by Frank for a game, why not be a part of history and help to promote our wonderful game.
