Thanks to Steve Ackerman and other faculty at UW-Madison for standing up to point out the absurdity of Robin Vos comments this week targeting UW Research programs. In addition to the direct impacts of their budget on the UW system, the ignorance and hostility directed at one of the nations best research institutions and one our states biggest economic engines by Vos, Alberta Darling, John Nygren and other legislative leaders sends a message to current and prospective faculty and students that Wisconsin does not value higher education or basic research. Imagine the pro and con column on the scratch pad of a world class researcher considering a job offer here? Pro: Cold long winters, good beer, good cheese, nice football team, mostly nice people, cute cows. Con: Wing nut legislature taking an axe to your budget every two years and trash talking your work constantly. That job at UMN probably looks a whole lot better, even if the winter is colder. Public schools and higher ed will factor big in the next state budget and we cannot afford to keep defunding and devaluing either. Keep the faith.
