Thanks to Vintage Seattle, we are given this picture, and told: November, 1970, we see the ship Anthemios docked at Terminal 86. Anthemios was a proud new ship when it called here in 1970. It was the first ship to call at the newly completed automated grain terminal at Pier 86. 30 years later, the ship once called Anthemios was scrapped. Thanks to the internet, and to the photographer who took this picture, we can know something of the life of the ship: This was IMO 7013434, a Bulk Carrier, built by Ishikawajima H.H., Tokyo, Japan, launched 1969; First registry, Anthemios, Piraeus, Greek flag to 1986; name changed to Golden Sea, Limosol, Cyprus flag to 1994; name changed to Progress Excellence, Male, Maldives flag; last dispatched to Alang, India 1999-2003, for break up. Some people say that ships are more than just metal and wood, engines and sails. Some who sail them call them She, familiarly and with respect, as though they are alive. Whether one believes that or not, these vessels, which have carried our very lifeblood, cannot fail to fascinate us. And, beyond the history of one ship, or of thousands, the history of our home is written here too. It is an accessible history. Take a look.
