Thanks to one Mr. Khan, who hates competition as much as Farah - TopicsExpress

Thanks to one Mr. Khan, who hates competition as much as Farah Khan hates logic, I was forced to watch an old film yesterday instead of Gone Girl which was pushed to next week. Judge is by the books family drama and though it has its moments I wouldnt really recommend it to anyone. There is nothing here that hasnt been seen or done before. Since 2008, Robert Downey Jr. has been in Tony Stark/ Iron Man mode in literally every film of his. He talks fast, he is rude, he is a genius, he is selfish and immature but has a heart of gold when all is said and done, this charade has been overdone in my opinion and though RDJ is charming and likable in this mode I long to see the great character actor who enthralled the viewers with his versatility in films like Chaplin, Zodiac, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the underrated comic gem-Tropic Thunder. The story is very cliched when an estranged son reconnects with his family on the eve of his mothers death and clashes with his father (the Judge) played competently by Robert Duvall. The Judge is charged with murder and his famous estranged lawyer son decides to take up the case (as cliched as it gets, I know). During the course of the movie, family cries together, family laughs together, pride and ego give way to love (how groundbreaking!) and film goes over and above the call of duty to ensure that RDJ is attractive enough to sleep with women aged twenty two to fifty (seriously we get it Hollywood, RDJ gets all the women why show it repeatedly in your films it gets really weird in this one). Father-Son drama does work however and is engaging, the dark horse in practically every movie he has ever starred in is Billy Bob Thronton, while everybody is over the top, we get a restrained focused performance from him as the prosecuting lawyer. In fact he was the reason I decided to watch this film in the first place not RDJ. At this stage I think its critical for RDJ to expand his range, I remember watching Sherlock Holmes films starring him, I almost expected the Iron Man suit to show up anytime in middle of 19th Century England, and thats never a good sign. P.S.- Some of the legal procedures shown in the film are downright dumb, though forgivable because I guess it got its heart in the right place. youtube/watch?v=8ikeVQ8WAcQ
