Thanks to some hard-working, conservation-minded students, we were able to release 71 head-started Blandings turtles at Assabet River NWR this spring. Students from Bristol Aggie NRM aka Bristol County Agricultural High School, Lynn Classical High School , Nashoba Brooks School , and Quinn Middle School came to the refuge in May and June of this year to release the hatchlings that they had been raising since last September. The hatchlings are able to grow much faster while being cared for by the students, making them less vulnerable to predation upon their release into the wetland. A big thank you to all the students, as well as the other head-start caregivers (New England Aquarium and Mass Audubons Oak Knoll & Attleboro Springs Wildlife Sanctuaries) and Blandings Turtle project supporters (Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, University of Georgias Savannah River Ecology Lab, Friends of Assabet River and Oxbow NWRs, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Oxbow Associates, Inc.).
