That Guy. That Guy is the one you see standing behind the fence at any Airport. He stands there, looking at planes and the people that come out of them. Sometimes, he has a camera and is madly taking photos. Other times, he just stands there quietly, taking it all in. For some time now, Ive made it my mission to go over to That Guy, and to say Gudday. That Guy is often surprised that someone comes over. One of those Rich Elite Pilots. Why is he coming to see me, Im on the other side of the fence. That Guy can only aspire to be such an Elite pilot, he says. When That Guy finds out that I am just an ordinary person, not a mega rich Elitist, you can see the change in his eyes. I speak with That Guy, ask him if hes a Pilot. Usually, That Guy says No, but Id love to be. Its easy, I say to him, and its cheaper than you think. I point to the Jabiru I learnt to fly in, telling That Guy how it cost me less than a cheap second hand car to get my Certificate. That Guy cant believe it. His eyes twinkle as he realises his dream may be closer than he ever thought possible. That Guy. Sometimes That Guy is another Pilot, just visiting. I then chat to That Guy about his Flying, the mutual people we may know - Aviation is a small world. Ive had two That Guys recently. One turned out to be the now late Graham White, tragically taken from us recently. Another That Guy, one I spoke to today, well That Guy comes from England and told me stories about his time working on an RAF Training Airfield, watching Tornados, Harriers and all sorts of Aircraft perform their flying duties. That Guy had that twinkle his eyes too. I pointed to the Flying School Office. That Guy smiled and said maybe. I was once That Guy. I was on the other side of the fence, looking in. I remember it well. Next time you see That Guy behind the fence, go say Gudday. It will make That Guys day.
