That feel.. Even though his behavior appears ungrateful to some. His behavior does raise a very good and valid point. Below is by far the best comment on his youtube video: His frustration comes from people trying to figure out a meaning behind everything when sometimes there isnt any. those words come out, you write them, you perform them. You are the vessel but you are just following your internal intuition (which is irrational) and therefore you dont understand any more than the listener what it all means. Youre just processing your feelings from living in a twisted society and using that intuition in that moment in time to write, your mind does not think like theirs of future repercussions the song might have, it only manages information in real-time, and so to someone like that it is very annoying to constantly ask for the meaning of something when all theyre trying to do with music is strike people emotionally in the present, make them feel something, not change the world politically. Thats why he asks are you gonna SEE the show ? Are you gonna HEAR it ?, its all that matters. That moment. The politically-charged lyrics are just a result of the frustrations and feelings of every-day life being poured out, theyre a mirror” “HIs frustration comes from people trying to figure out a meaning behind everything” A songwriter no more knows the meaning behind the essence of his very being than the listener does, it is never an object of its own knowledge..just as a fire doesn’t burn itself, knife doesn’t cut itself, and light doesn’t illuminate itself..it is always an endless mystery to itself (Inspired by Alan Watts) A songwriter at best can tell you why he thinks he does what he does, but even that is just us writing lyrics..its the same process, improvisation is not an option when your a singer songwriter, its a good tool, but it still cannot make the fire burn itself :) “I don’t know. This “I don’t know” uttered in the infinite interior of the spirit, is the same thing as: I love, I let go, I don’t try to force or control, It’s the same thing as humility.” ~ Alan Watts I’m not necessarily saying that Bob Dylan mastered humility himself with that Alan Watts quote above, but what i’m saying is the basic fundamental nature of the phrase “I don’t know” is truly powerful and completely innocent. And, the interviewers seemed to get kind of offended when Bob would say “I don’t know” to one of their questions, but really, it’s the most fundamental thing we can say as human beings..as long as the point is grasped. *I am truly thankful for all of the songwriters in my life that inspire me.
