That is the genius of the Christian story. First God blames Adam and Eve for sin and threatens them with death. But sin continues. Then God blames all humanity for sin and kills all humans with the exception of Noah and his family. But sin continues. Then God chooses the Jews and threatens them with big sticks and entices them with big carrots to give up sin and live just and righteous lives, but sin continues. Finally God realizes that it is God rather than humanity thats the problem, and hence it is God rather than humanity that must be punished. So God does the only logical thing: God becomes an innocent human and dies on the cross.
