That the Nupes are the dominant or, more accurately, the most visible ethnic group (perhaps, of the lower middle-class?), in Life Camp, Abuja, is not open to debate. In any gathering here, there is definitely the Nupe. At the neighbourhood Jummuat mosque on Fridays, the Nupe-speaking groups are among the loudest. The question is, how did they get to occupy this space in this number? The Nupes here are mostly of Lapai descent, their peculiar accent suggests so, which validates my friends theory that were beneficiaries of Engr. A. A. Kures largesse in his days at FCDA. Its said that some years ago, the Nupe community here protested the naming of a particular street, wanted it named Nupe Road because all the houses there are owned by them. Aint Nupe the Fourth Force in Nigeria as Dr. Àmà Ndagi Abdullahi would say? :)
