That video of the NYPD chokehold take down of Eric Garner is very disturbing. In my opinion, he wasn’t resisting arrest. He said he was tired of being harassed and that it was going to stop that day. They’ll argue that was resisting, but he was never physically threatening. He even threw his hands up to show them he wasn’t resisting, as they put him in a chokehold and threw him to the ground. Apparently, he had just done a good deed by breaking up a fight, but police accused him of selling illegal loose, untaxed, cigarettes. Now there’s a crime worth taking a life for. How many years do we have to watch brothers taken out like this? Johnnie Cochran must be turning over in his grave. He fought so hard against these tactics. I’m reminded of Ralph Ellison’s classic book “Invisible Man”. It must be hard to treat people with dignity and respect when you can’t even see them. You see “To serve and protect” written on the side of so many police cars, but before they leave roll call every morning, maybe they should be read this quote from Dr. Cornel West. “You can’t lead the people if you don’t Love the people. You can’t save the people if you don’t serve the people.”
