That was such a fun weekend!! Absolutely NOTHING turned out the way I expected...which is to be expected :-p We got to the Guadalupe in the afternoon on Friday with plenty of daylight left. I wanted to ride the horseshoe on tubes once before we went to our hotel...because Allen Koenig and Brandon Willcox had never been there. I wanted to show Allen that the river is much higher there than the places he had been, and therefore a lot more fun ...and so of course the water is remarkably low right now :-p It was still good enough that we made it through in a couple of hours. Then the super nice and RELAXING hotel I booked in San Antonio was flooded with LOUD and excited little boys for a sports tournament...and their parents let them trash the place...the staff was frazzled, the guests were pissed....but we were great :-) It made me appreciate how well behaved my kids are and that they never acted like that...ever! :-D (Its always ok when its someone elses kids hehe) Then back to the river bright and early on Saturday...and I decided to take us past the first pick up, a few miles down the river to the 4th Crossing...the water was higher immediately after we passed the horseshoe and continued down the river...we all agreed that was so much more fun... But then after about 8 hours of riding the river, we got out and waited for our ride...which never came! All the other tube rental places picked up and left, over and over, and the phone at the place that was supposed to pick us up was OUT OF ORDER. So we were stranded in the middle of nowhere...until a VERY nice group of locals took us and all of our tubes back to our car...they even had to go home and get a second truck to pull it off...and they were SO FRIENDLY and refused to take our cash for the favor! Then when we got back to the place where we rented the tubes (where I had rented tubes on tons of previous visits and never had any problems), the lady tried to tell us it was OUR FAULT we were stranded...that they dont pick up down there anymore because the water is so low, and none of the places pick up there now (though they all were picking up there when we were just standing there...and all the other tube places said yes thats where yours picks up...so THEY were the only ones who knew that they werent picking up guests, not their guests, not the locals, not the other tube rentals...) and that they had said so (5 against 1, they did NOT tell us that) When we all stood there looking at the lady like she can kiss all of our asses, she changed her tone, started back-peddling and offering us discounts and free stuff....but wed already decided that if we tubed on Sunday wed use a different place. There were tons of convenient locations to choose from. But instead we opted for a scenic Sunday drive through San Antonio and up to Fredericksburg. Either Brandon or Allen said it was pretty there; I had never been there, so of course, I said lets go! It was so pretty!! Tons of wild flowers are still blooming - we didnt miss them! I wanted to stop on every single stretch and take pictures...but I didnt because we were all so anxious to see the next place..and then the next thing I knew we were home already! Way too soon! Another great part of the trip, though, was when we exited at home at Marine Creek Pkwy, and drove past EFW where I worked EVERY DAY for three years. I looked at the cars in the parking lot on Sunday evening knowing there was a time when one of those would have been mine, but NOT NOW! My little pre-summer vacation weekend was over and I wasnt miserable about it... because Im not returning to THAT anymore!! :-D Nope, Im going to make stained glass for a month and then drive to the BEACH! And Ill STAY there as long as Tara Larriviere will let me :-D I love my life.
