Thato Tsautse I am sharing this one with you. THE FARMER AND THE SEED. Todays devotion: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up”. Mk 4:3, 4 NIV Asked a few years ago why agricultural production had increased markedly whilst the amount of land under cultivation had been severely reduced, a farmer replied, “We have more productive seed and better fertilizers now”. Many factors affect farming. The farmer and his attitude are important, as are technology and farming methods. The state of the soil is crucial and the weather plays a vital role that can “make or break” a crop. The presence or absence of pests and diseases can also affect things. Farming is not for the faint-hearted! Farming was one of the main occupations in ancient Israel. Much of the land was not suitable for arable farming but it was for sheep. However they grew plenty of corn which was needed then as now for baking bread. The farmer Jesus portrayed was a common sight and he was a person of reliable and regular methods. He knew just when to plant and just how to prepare the soil for the seed in order to get the best crop in the end. Most likely his father had done it for years before he did and passed on the available technology. And no doubt he too would hand it on to his son or sons. Scientifically prepared seed would have been unknown - the seed would just have been saved from last year’s crop. The farmer represents God, and is a good picture for the Lord. It complements the others - creator, shepherd, soldier, judge and redeemer. All of the picture-words used for God convey some truth. We need them all to get a full picture. PRAYER THOUGHTLord, you are the great provider.
