Thats three times this week Ive been asked - by someone who is paid to ask - to do a very substantial piece of work, involving in one case ten hours of travel and in another case five evening classes - for no pay at all, not even expenses - or for pay which is less than the minimum wage. Forgive me, arts organisers. I know that you are committed and passionate. But you should be committed and passionate enough to accept that it is NOT ethical to ask a professional to work for free. We ALL do appearances, courses, events for free from time to time. But when every work request makes the assumption that the organiser will be paid, but the artist whom people come to see will not....you take my point. I am very tired of feeling that I am the rude one, when having to decline these requests.
