That’s the way Edward Okpa, a Nigerian real estate entrepreneur in Dallas, sees it, too. Okpa appreciates the “compassion” shown by the U.S. government and the public, which has organized protests and rallies and a social media campaign, Bring Back Our Girls. While some are pressing for the U.S. to get more involved, Okpa said the real problem is in Nigeria. “The U.S. cannot do more than Nigeria wants to do,” said Okpa, who came to the U.S. in the ’80s and has run for mayor of Dallas on more than one occasion. “I applaud the world media for bringing to the fore the issues and exposing the weakness in leadership of the Nigerian government.” On Wednesday, when President Barack Obama swept through Texas on a fundraising trip, Okpa, a Republican, joined him for dinner. He talked briefly with Obama about the crisis in Nigeria. He said the president was “very frank” about the challenges he faced in dealing with the government there. “He said, ‘I know you’re from Nigeria. You’re smart people. But your government is very inefficient,’” Okpa said.
