The #1 ranked Parkland Cobras volleyball team headed north for the inaugural tournament of the 2014 season in the Wisconsin Dells. The Cobras faced two out-of-district opponents today in Carl Sandburg College (IL) and #13 ranked Kansas City Kansas CC. Parkland hit an impressive .318 against CSC in the 11am match en route to a 3-0 win, 25-15, 25-12, 25-20. All fifteen Cobras made their debut in the match with sophomores Lori VanBeek and Teigan Flaws leading the attack with 8 kills each. Sophomore libero Kaitlyn Hunt had 11 digs and 13 service points on the match, and classmate Morgan Hickman had 8 digs to go along with 11 assists. Fellow sophomore and setter Madison Weldon also notched 11 assists, and Ayla Dew had two service aces. In match #2, the Cobras faced a fast and athletic KCKCC team ranked #13 in the nation. The Cobras knocked off the Blue Devils from Kansas 3-1 in scores of 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16. VanBeek and Flaws again led the offense with 10 and 9 kills respectively while freshman Lizzy Barnard also notched 9. VanBeek also had 8 block assists with freshman Hayley Gray putting back 5. Hunt had a terrific match in the back row digging up 23 balls, and the sophomore setter found confidence and comfort running a solid offense with Weldon recording 18 assists and Hickman 16. Barnard also recorded 5 aces for the Cobras, and Weldon had 3 aces and an outstanding 19 service points. The Cobras are 2-0 on the young season and face #12 Muskegon (MI) and possibly the best team at the tournament in unranked Mott (MI) tomorrow.
