The 12 Days of Christmas…is it just a repetitive song of the season that drives some people mad, or a song containing a secret catechism about Christ (now disproved); or is it simply the 12 days between Christmas and Epiphany? But if there is a symbolic significance to these days - then why 12? Why not the sacred number 7 or 3, they too are biblical numerology favorites as well as 12? So what is all this 12 falderal about? 12 is believed to be a mystical number (4 of the material plane times 3 of the spiritual plane): 12 months of the year, 12 tribes of Israel and Apostles, 12 Olympian Gods, 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit, 12 signs of the Zodiac and astrological houses, 12 people needed for a jury, 12 hours in a day and in a night, 12 pairs of ribs in the human body, 12 Knights of the Round Table, 12 Labors of Heracles, 12 stars on the EU flag, 12 names of the Hindu Sun God…well you get the idea.) The 12 days of Christmas, traditionally, begin with sundown on 12/25 (marking days as sunset to sunset is an ancient tradition in many cultures.) In the Christian tradition many people exchanged a gift on each day of the 12 (no doubt the subtext for the now ubiquitous carol). I suggest using the 12 days as days of seeking and giving gifts of a far more substantive nature than baubles, toys, sweets and sundry other material objects. Replace the crass mercantilism and materialism of this season with deep soul. Ask for, and give, gifts related to deepening of soul and life and spirit - each gift related to one of the 12 signs of the Zodiac (which are the pagan foundation for the 12 Days of Christmas - just like the all the other pagan foundations for almost every single Christmas tradition and symbol.) Each day I will post an item from my gift list that I invite you to share in. ENJOY!! Blessed Yule! Merry Christmas! On the FIRST Day of Christmas -- ARIES: I ask for, and give to to others, the gift of... COURAGE. The courage to stand for ones truth, the courage to be gentle and vulnerable, the courage to risk new things and new thoughts and beliefs, the courage to heal, the courage to forgive, the courage to laugh and dance and be a divine fool, the courage to begin again, the courage to trust, the courage to sing the song of my soul loudly, boldly, passionately.
