The 14th of July marks the date of another revolution - the Iraqi overthrow of the Royal Family in 1958 - which had been placed into power by the British (along with all those borders that seem to have disappeared this year) When I was in Iraq the first time, and saw the 14th of July bridge in Baghdad, I Eurocentrically thought it must have been a gift from France, until someone explained to me all this - but well, it all shows that history is a continuum - would Iraq be better with a King?
