The 1994 Northridge Earthquake severely damaged the ceiling of the 10,000 square foot Main Reading Room. A repair strategy to provide the highest standard of seismic safety and historic preservation was developed, restoring and reinforcing originally decorative pieces, and replacing elements with stronger and lighter materials. The project won the Governors Award for Historic Preservation and an honor award from the Los Angeles Conservancy.
