The 1997 American College of Rheumatology classification criteria for SLE include 4 out of 11 of the following: malar rash, discoid rash, photosensitivity, oral ulcers, arthritis, serositis, (persistent proteinuria or cellular casts), neurologic findings (seizures or psychosis), hematologic involvement (leukopenia, lymphopenia, or thrombocytopenia), a positive test for antinuclear antibodies, and immunologic findings (dsDNA, anti-Smith, or a positive antiphospholipid antibody).
