The 19th Amendment. August 18, 1920 my right as a woman to vote - TopicsExpress

The 19th Amendment. August 18, 1920 my right as a woman to vote was made a reality. Interesting to note that on this anniversary, it was apparently a letter from a mother to her son, a Tennessee legislator, that sealed the deal in our favor. I had no memory that a red rose boutonniere showed you were against, and a yellow rose, you were for. But I did know that it was the Republican Party that supported and the Democrat Party who screamed "No!" So I may start sporting a yellow rose from time to time, and when I do, I will think of this comment: “I know that a mother’s advice is always safest for her boy to follow,” he explained, “and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification.” So said 24 year old legislator Harry Burn when he voted "yes" even while he wore a red rose.
