The 1st of August is a big day for all of us as Ayrshire College officially launches. This got us thinking, what other important events share this special date? In 1498, Christopher Columbus became the first European to visit what is now Venezuela. In 1831, a new version of London Bridge was officially opened. In 1834, slavery was abolished across the British Empire. In 1914, Germany declared war on Russia at the beginning of World War One. In 1936, French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent was born. And, in 1981, MTV made its first broadcast in the United States, on August 1st.
