The 2015 CA Measles outbreak facts, for those too lazy to look it all up: The latest report from the CA Department of Public Health confirms 59 cases of measles in CA since December 2014. Of the confirmed cases, 42 have been linked to an initial exposure in Disneyland and include five Disney employees. Patients range in age from seven months to 70 years and the vaccination status is documented for 34 of the 59 cases. Of these 34, 28 were unvaccinated, one had received one dose and five had received two or more doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. Basically, 6 people who were vaccinated got it, 28 of those people were unvaccinated by choice of their parent or because of pre-existing conditions preventing vaccination. We can _likely_ assume that the remaining 25 probably were also not vaccinated considering there are no records of their vaccination. I am seeing a lot of back and forth from the anti-vax community saying that there is misinformation surrounding the outbreak and that vaccines still shouldnt be trusted, mainly because 6 people who WERE vaccinated got sick... Yes, we all agree that no vaccine is 100% effective... But in this case, we cannot infer anything from the amount of people that got the disease other than there were likely thousands of people at Disneyland/DCA exposed to the virus, measles spreads through aerosol and is highly contagious, and the majority of the people who actually got sick were unvaccinated. Make your own conclusion, but 6 out of probably thousands of people exposed vs 53 out of thousands seems like better odds to me.
