The 50-lap Modified feature during Snowball Derby week at Five - TopicsExpress

The 50-lap Modified feature during Snowball Derby week at Five Flags Speedway (FL) always presents eventful outcomes when drivers from across the continent convene together. For the second straight year, no one could pass local Gulf Coast racer Donnie Hamrac for the win. “Just to win two, period, is great, but two in a row is awesome,” Hamrac told Speed51 powered by JEGS following a flag-to-flag victory. “I had all of my crew last year, but we were missing my pops so for him to be here is awesome.” Hamrac took the lead from fast qualifier Jim Wall on the initial start, but had to dodge several cautions that bunched up the field including one that he was forced to narrowly avoid on lap 13. “We went off into one and the rear just came around on me when we hit some water or oil. They gave me my spot back and I held everybody off.” On a late restart Texan Joe Aramendia, a veteran of multiple NASCAR series and 2014 Houston Motorsports Park champion, stayed with Hamrac on the outside until contact between the two cut his tire. Aramendia had no hard feelings about the incident. “Donnie got loose and chased it up the racetrack, but it’s a racing thing,” said Aramendia. “We’ll do it again next year.” The initial contact between the two sent Aramendia into former Snowball Derby Modified winner from Indiana, Brian Nester, who managed to hold on for a second-place finish despite significant damage to the car. “The front end got screwed up in the first wreck and the tow was way out, but we still got to (Hamrac) with the way it was,” said Nester. “We challenged for the lead at the end with a screwed up car so we’ll take second.” Winchester Speedway Run for the Gun winner Kyle Purvis made a bid for a top position late but settled for third. Chris Cotto and Rocky Rogers rounded out the top-five.
