A study conducted by the Brooke in Uttar Pradesh looked at data collected from discussions with local people as well as from official sources to identify the role of equine animals in people’s lives. For people who owned equine animals, they were the main source of income, and allowed families to purchase over 80% of their food needs. This income is generated either in the brick kiln or by transporting goods and passengers for a fee. Evidence suggests that working equines can be as important to livelihoods compared with other livestock, although the cost of maintaining their health is high. These communities need to be supported and have access to appropriate services. The cost for veterinary services for cows and buffalo may be subsidised by government policy whereas this is rarely the case for horses, donkeys and mules. The Brooke will be using these research results to ask key decision makers for working equine animals to be included in livestock policies and programmes. Dont forget... 11am!
