The AHOMs of the Brahmaputra Valley (present day Assam) are the only indigenous people of Bharat that the Mughals could never defeat in Battle. They are the reason that the Assam Valley, and by extension, the entire North Eastern India stayed out of the ambit of the Mughal Empire in India. The AHOMs produced two of the greatest Generals in the history of Bharat .... Ahom General Lachit Borphukan, who defeated the mighty Mughal Army at the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. The Mughal Army consisted of 30,000 infantry, 15,000 archers, 18,000 Turkish cavalry, 5,000 gunners and over 1000 cannons besides a large flotilla of boats !! The other, equally successful and famous Ahom General was Kolia Bhomora Phukan. Ahom General Lachit Barphukans Statue at Jorhat, Assam.
