The AMA has proposed that obesity be treated as a disease. I - TopicsExpress

The AMA has proposed that obesity be treated as a disease. I think this is a big step forward for the treatment of the obese patient. However, how the insurance companies choose to treat and handle this will determine, I think everything. Insurance companies will pay for weight loss surgery (WLS) but will not pay for a gym membership or a non-surgical weight loss program (Weight Watchers, Medifast, and others) even if doctor mandated. Which is crazy, spend $50,000 for surgery or $2,000 for working with a personal trainer and some low calorie foods. Then maybe doctors will begin to think that being overweight is much more than overeating and being lazy and maybe begin to recognize that being obese is truly killing their patients and take a moment and think of ways to help them. cnn/2013/06/19/health/ama-obesity-disease-change/index.html?hpt=he_t3
