The Adams House is located at 7400 Tampa in Reseda. It was built in 1939 and designed by Lloyd Wright, the son of Frank Lloyd Wright. It has two bedrooms and is 676 square feet (26 ‘ x 26’). Bill Adams wanted something simple that he could build on a budget himself and this attracted Wright. Plans were drawn for a square house, with a roof angled to provide relief from the San Fernando Valleys intense summer heat. The Adams family took four years to build the two-bedroom home on a half-acre lot at what is now Tampa (at the corner of Hart), but which was then an un-named dirt road. Wright and family ended up parting ways over what Lloyd Wright had dubbed the Mat House (for the thatch-like roof hed proposed) when Bill Adams nailed down cedar shakes instead. The architect collected only $50 of his $125 fee. The home was built for $1,351. The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission designated the building a historical-cultural landmark in 1996. The last member of the original Adams family, Barbara Adams, died in the home on January 23, 2009. She was the daughter-in-law of Bill Adams and had lived in the house since 1986.
