The Advance Centre is a charity able to offer remarkable improvement for children with brain injuries such as cerebral palsy and autism through an approach called The Scotson technique (TST). TST works by treating the children’s abnormal immature breathing. Normal breathing controls circulation and including circulation of blood to the brain, while the internal pressures of breathing create and maintain muscular-skeletal structure. A brain injury affects the development of the respiratory organs and their use with disastrous consequences, creating a roadblock to the recovery potential. At Advance parents are taught to become therapists. TST exercises involve the application of light gentle breath like pressures across the child’s diaphragm and lungs and onto the joints of the limbs. They feel good to receive, so children enjoy the therapy. After three months there can be quite dramatic improvements. Children hold up their heads better and sit better as posture improves, they become more able to communicate and definitely much happier! Families return to Advance to learn further exercises every three months so that their children continue to progress and their development becomes more normal. The approach works for every child bringing new hope and encouragement to the entire family. We would like help to fund more children coming to us and to outreach to those who cannot travel. Furthermore, we need to re-develop the outside of our building for better wheel chair access for our families. Our aim is to be able to give every child the benefit of the TST approach which uniquely offers a better future brain injured children.
