The Adventures of The Red Baron - Day 15 Friends, Today The Red Baron and I went for a swim. It was a beautiful morning and we bounced down to the pool. We were there early and dived in, carving a chevron through the virgin water. We magnificently smashed through the strokes, as smooth as a dolphin, gliding like a seal, slipping through the water like an elegantly sleek diving oiled cormerant . . . Towards the end of the first lap THE RED BARON and I started to tire. We did a reasonably competent tumble-turn and headed for home. Each stroke started to feel like moving through soup, I was confused; what was happening, why was I so slow? Then I understood, of course it was the drag from TRB holding me back. I was tiring badly, and starting to go under. There was only 10m to go, but I was so slow and hurting, it felt like my feet had dropped and my beer gut was dragging on the bottom of the pool. With 5m to go I started to black out, maybe this would be it - was this to be the end of me and THE RED BARON??? The ignominy of drowning in 4 of water would at least bring sweet relief from the pain in my lungs. As I took (what I thought was) my last breath and sunk to towards the bottom, I prepared to meet my maker. I glided down. Like a sunken battleship (although my feet were sticking out because after all it was the shallow end) my head torpedoed down and it was all over.... or was it, because suddenly I felt movement and I was surfacing, then gliding through the water. My arms were still by my sides, how did this happen, I hear you ask??? Then I realised that the side of my face was twitching in a regular rhythm; of course my spinal cord and TRB had saved me. I was swimming faster and more easily than ever before. TRB was propelling me through the water and the next hour or so passed easily enough with TRB at the helm. Lap after lap fled with ease. Eventually of course, the session had to end. At the end of the last lap I swung up my goggles and ignoring the ladder at the side (like a man) leaped out of the end of the pool. I stood on the edge, flicked back my hair, wiped off THE RED BARON and acknowledged the crowd (as usual there were some kids pointing and giggling and mothers with open mouths - of course I have become accustomed to these situations of adoration since having THE RED BARON). I winked to the kids, stretched my arms to the sky greeting the sun, smiled and took a step forward into the new day . . . . and fell flat on my face on the concrete . . . . unfortunately my togs had slipped down around my ankles during my pool dismount! Until tomorrow.....
