The Adventures of Uncle Swilly III© Written by Roger Webb The Slivey Brothers: We Buy Junk Cars and Scarp Metal Haulers One would be hard pressed to find a place to stick a thin dime in the back end of that truck bed for all the scrap metal they’ve collected the last couple nights. Between the washing machines, old sinks, semi truck tire rims, and who knows what else is lying under all that junk besides that there is at least seventy-five pounds of cans stuck in-between the metal. They even have the roof piled high with bedsprings and a round end 198 gallon galvanized horse trough filled full of rusted out bicycles to boot. It’s a sight for sore eyes to watch them drive slowly down the road making sure none of their valuable cargo falls off while on their way to the junk yard. One has to get a load of their truck they found several years ago out behind Yates old place abandoned in the orange grove. It’s an 1968 International 1200C Crew Cab 304 V-8 Engine, T-18 4-Speed Transmission, Dana 60 - Rear, FA-10 Front, 6 Foot Short Bed, 19.5 Tires, Factory AM Radio with 324,000 Original Miles with every primer color known to man spray painted here and there. When they found it, all four doors were gone, no hood and a missing tail gate. Out side of that it’s in perfect condition not considering the un-repairable smashed in fenders on both sides and side of the bed is completely rusted out with holes big enough you can stick a wash tub through them. When you follow the truck it runs side ways just a tad. It looks like they’re always making a right hand turn but never actually doing it. Here a while back they were hitting a little hard times and decided to remove the siding off their mobile trailer house and sell the aluminum as scrap. Now days anytime someone is giving directions they always tell someone to turn left at the house trailer that has no siding with the water heater and insulation showing. They told each other they would replace the siding before the rainy season kicks in but that has been two years ago. Having no doors on the truck is a great benefit at times especially when they are hauling lumber. They just stick the boards through the doors and let her stick out evenly on both sides. Comes in handy when the back is piled high. To keep the bed of the truck from collapsing they have a ratchet wench wrapped around holding it up off the ground. When hitting the mother load they hook up their trailer they made out of a frame from a 30ft mobile home. Usually they have it piled so high they have to be carful when driving under over passes. Once they came barreling down Hwy 50 as they drove under the overpass half the load got knocked off and caused a traffic jam for an hour and a half. The local news came out thinking it was a ten-car pile up but only to find it was just junk everywhere. At least the two brothers got a spot on the local news. FREE ADVERTIZEMENT! One would never mistake these two guys from any one else around. Both wear greasy white cut off jeans that are at least two sizes to large, steel toed work boots and sweat shirts with the sleeves cut off. Does not matter if it is 110 degrees outside they always wear those sweat shirts. Neither one shaves no more than once a week. There is not a tooth between either one of them. Oh I forgot to mention they always wear white hard hats for protection and are never seen without them on. They have twenty-two junk cars parked in their yard that they sell parts off of. When they get one completely stripped they haul it to scrap. There is one thing everyone says about the Slievey’s, you’ll never find a better set of brothers. You see they are deacons down at the Fire Baptized of the 2nd First Church of The Spirit Born and have been faith full members there for the last 25 years. They can quote you more scriptures and tell you exactly where they are located and between the two, they support five overseas missionaries full time, all by themselves. This little story goes to prove you never pass any kind of judgment by what you see. It’s what’s in a man heart that matters not what the outside appearance looks like. Hey when you’re passing through be sure to look up the Unc and he’ll tell you about some more of his friends and boy he has a bunch of them and yes they are friends for life!
