The Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) is a five year, multi-center, randomized trial designed to assess the effects of oral supplementation of macular xanthophylls (10 mg Lutein and 2 mg Zeaxanthin) and/or long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, 350 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 650 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) daily on the progression to advanced age- related macular degeneration (AMD). This study was not truly placebo-controlled as the control group took an AREDS supplement as this is known to be better than a true placebo.
