The Aiken Department of Public Safety will be conducting its fourth Safe Communities Offender Notification this evening at 6:00PM, in the City of Aiken Council Chambers, 214 Park Avenue NW. The offender notifications are an important part of the Safe Communities crime-reduction initiative. Offenders are identified based on their present and past criminal activities. Offenders attend a meeting with law enforcement officials and community members to hear the effects of the crimes they are committing. Offenders are also given, in writing, the penalties they face if they commit another crime. They are offered opportunities to connect with area service providers and nonprofit organizations to help them to pursue a different, more productive, path. Those choosing to seek help from their community have proven this method works because instead of re-offending, they become contributors, not takers. The public is invited to attend this notification. Those wishing to attend are asked to be seated in the council chambers by 6:00PM.
