The Ambient Mind This evening, I was swimming alone, In a heated indoor pool, at a nearby gymnasium. The water temperature was 84 deg F. The pool was 25 meters long. Initially, the water felt cold, But, as my body got used to it, I felt comfortable and I enjoyed Alternate swimming and walking for 45 minutes. As I was swimming on my back, I noticed three large skylights above, Two strings of colorful warning flags Before the end of the lane, and A young life-guard sitting quietly in his chair. Then, I realized that I had apparently two minds: An embodied one and an ambient one. The embodied mind was receiving and responding To signals from my body, memory and ego; Whereas, the ambient mind was receiving and responding To signals from my surroundings including The pool water, room-air, lights, furniture and people. The ambient mind was active All-around, all-inclusive and all-encompassing, Like the ambient air, light, and music. It was like an ecological niche, Serving as a comfortable and supportive nest For me and my swimming organism. Later on, I was so relaxed, but fully aware, That I forgot the difference between the two minds, As if the two minds had merged into one another, Like a cup of tea cooling naturally To its ambient temperature. When I came out of the gymnasium, It was dark and I could see the moon and many stars. Then, the mind naturally expanded To the beautiful visible sky, With its immeasurable Ambient energy~awareness~being. Vinod D Deshmukh January 8, 2015
