The American Civil War, aka the War Between the States, or simply the Civil War in the United States. American Civil War: U.S. & Confederate States of America USA: President & VP: Abraham Lincoln/Andrew Johnson CSA: President & VP: Jefferson Davis/Alexander H. Stephens USA: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, NH, NJ, NY, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin CSA: SC, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, NC During the war, Nevada & WV joined as New States of the Union. Tennessee & Louisiana were returned to Union Military Control early in the war. The territories of Colorado, Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, NM, Utah, and Washington fought on the Union side. Several slave-holding Native American Tribes supported the Confederacy, giving the Indian Territory [now Oklahoma] a small, Bloody Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation was an Executive Order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan 1, 1863, as a war measure during the American Civil War, to all segments of the Executive Branch [including the Army and Navy] of the United States. It proclaimed the Freedom of Slaves in the ten states that were still in rebellion, thus applying to 3.1 Million of the 4 Million Slaves in the U.S. at the time. The Proclamation was based on the Presidents Constitutional Authority as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces; it was not a Law passed by Congress. Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution Senate: April 8, 1864/HOR: Jan 31, 1865/Adopted: Dec 18, 1865 Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
