The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy Fall Internship Opportunities The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that acts as a catalyst to advance energy efficiency policies, programs, technologies, investments, and behaviors. ACEEE seeks a interns for the buildings, industry, local policy and transportation research programs and the communications department. Please forward these opportunities to any qualified candidates you know. *********************************************************************************** Buildings Program Internship - PAID Position Description This intern position will support ACEEE-led outreach and communications efforts by the Energy Efficient Code Coalition, local governments supporting sustainability policies and other stakeholders to educate local governments and code officials around technical code issues that improve the energy efficiency of the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). The interns main duties will be to update information supporting an outreach and communications campaign in the run-up to the Final Public Comment Hearings in the fall of 2016, and to gather and organize contact information (email and postal mailing addresses) of local government code officials. The intern in this position will gain an understanding of how public policy is implemented in the current national model energy code development process. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Develop and maintain local government outreach and contact information, as well as fundamental local government statistics such as population data, organizational memberships, etc. 2. Prepare periodic reports on local government participation in the model code process and customized reports and data products for coalition members and campaign participants. 3. Research, gather and organize contact information (email and postal mailing addresses) of local government code officials for local, regional and national outreach efforts. Skills/Qualifications 1. Bachelors degree in a relevant field, preferably working towards an advanced degree in a relevant academic area. 2. Interest in and familiarity with a range of energy efficiency policies and/or local level sustainability policies strongly preferred. Familiarity with energy-efficient technologies preferred, but not required 3. Familiarity and experience with outreach and information campaigns, policy advocacy and issue campaigns, or political campaigns 4. Strong internet and interview-based research ability. 5. Strong writing and oral communication skills required 6. Self-motivation and ability to manage multiple assignments (as needed), work efficiently, and meet deadlines Timing This is an internship of flexible duration (3-6 months) starting November, 2014. The project will require a time commitment of 20-40 hours/week depending on the successful applicants academic schedule and availability. The internship will be an excellent opportunity for those interested in communications at a nonprofit organization with a focus on energy efficiency and environmental issues. The accepted candidate will receive some training on public relations Web-based tools as necessary. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Maintain a database of news articles; 2. Monitor effectiveness of outreach activities (e.g., open rates of e-mail blasts); 3. Conduct press-based research as needed; 4. Create stakeholder and media lists; 5. Assist communications associate with outreach duties; 6. Analyze and prepare reports about communications outreach and determine ways to more effectively further the ACEEE mission. Skills/Qualifications 1. Bachelors or Masters degree in a related field (or enrolled in a degree program); 2. Interest in communications and energy issues strongly preferred; 3. Experience with PR tools such as Constant Contact and Vocus preferred; 4. Excellent written and oral communication skills required; and 5. Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple assignments (as needed), work efficiently, and meet deadlines. Timing Local applicants preferred as this internship will begin in Fall 2014 with the possibility of extending into the next semester. The purpose of this early phase of research is to identify common and leading edge uses of intelligent efficiency by programs, especially with respect to measurement and verification of energy savings. This work may also involve interviewing staff of efficiency programs and the firms that evaluate them. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Literature search of efficiency program websites, conference proceedings, and news articles; 2. Organization of information collected and development of bibliography; and 3. Identification of and interviewing of people currently involved in the use of ICT in energy efficiency programs. Skills/Qualifications 1. Bachelors degree in a relevant field, preferably working towards an advanced degree in a relevant academic area. 2. Interest in and familiarity with a range of energy efficiency policies and/or local level sustainability policies strongly preferred. Familiarity with energy-efficient technologies preferred, but not required. 3. Strong internet and interview-based research ability. Experience researching legislation and policy strongly preferred. 4. Strong writing and oral communication skills required. 5. Self-motivation and ability to manage multiple assignments (as needed), work efficiently, and meet deadlines. Timing This is a 30 week internship starting fall of 2014. We do not accept calls about our internships. ____________________________________________________________ Local Policy Internship - Paid Position Description The intern will support ACEEEs Local Policy and Community Strategies team. The interns primary task will be data collection and analysis for a report assessing the progress of U.S. and Canadian cities toward improving the energy performance of their local government, buildings sector and community as a whole. The intern will also assist in preparation of the section of the 2015 City Energy Efficiency Scorecard related to the historical energy performance of cities. The intern may assist with other tasks related to state and local energy efficiency policy, including research or outreach for the City Energy Efficiency Scorecard, the State Energy Efficiency Scorecard, or the State and Local Policy Database. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Collect city greenhouse gas or energy inventories, other energy performance data sets, and document the related goals set by these cities. 2. Complete basic analysis of the findings from this research. Time permitting, the intern may also begin writing the performance assessment report and/or assisting in interview with city staff regarding efficiency strategies. 3. Contribute to developing and writing the City Performance section of the 2015 City Energy Efficiency Scorecard, which will be based in part of the inventory data collected. 4. Assist, as needed, with other administrative, research and outreach tasks related to state and local energy efficiency policy. Skills/Qualifications 1. Bachelors degree in a relevant field, preferably working towards an advanced degree in a relevant academic area. 2. Interest in and familiarity with a range of energy efficiency policies and/or local level sustainability policies strongly preferred. Familiarity with energy-efficient technologies preferred, but not required. 3. Strong internet and interview-based research ability. 4. Experience with basic quantities analysis, including experience working with large datasets in Microsoft Excel. 5. Strong writing and oral communication skills required. 6. Vehicles listed in Greenercars.org earn a Green Score based on a lifecycle analysis of air emissions and energy use. This internship will provide an undergraduate or graduate student with an excellent opportunity to apply analytical skills and knowledge of autos while learning about environmental and policy issues. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Conduct research on technical issues relating to vehicles and their impacts and assist in updating the 2015 methodology; 2. Conduct research on upcoming alternative technology vehicles for model year 2015; 3. Set up GreenerCars.org spreadsheet model for detailed lifecycle analysis and scoring; and 4. Communicate with vehicle manufacturers to source vehicle data. Skills/Qualifications 1. Candidate should be working towards or have a Bachelors degree in a relevant field. 2. Interest in and familiarity with vehicle and transportation issues. Familiarity with vehicle technologies and operation preferred. 3. Strong Excel analytical skills. Experience with Visual Basic programming preferred. 4. Strong internet and interview-based research ability. 5.
