The American Physical Society (APS) April 2014 meeting in Savannah, GA provided extensive presentations on astrophysics, particle physics, and nuclear physics. One of the most popular sessions was given by Neil Degrasse Tyson. It was certainly the most entertaining of the hundreds at the conference; and it would have been enjoyed by anyone interested in science. At the end of the session he was almost mobbed by about fifty young physicists who wanted their picture taken with him. He put up with this for about ten minutes as almost everyone was successful since cameras are now ubiquitous. Tyson may be science’s equivalent of a rock star. haydenplanetarium.org/tyson/ My session was well received and everyone seemed happy with the calculation on the accretion rate of the supermassive black hole in the center of Andromeda Galaxy. Even the implications that the entire local group will be consumed by this SNBH were seen as reasonable. But maybe considering the consequences of the Andromeda-Milky Way merger which is billions of years in the future has not been a priority for most people.
