The American Red Cross, Homeland Security and FEMA all recommend purifying your drinking water through the process of distillation in an emergency or disaster situation, not filtration. If you give it much thought, the reason should be obvious by understanding the simple science behind the distillation process. Regardless of the nature of the emergency, whether natural or man-made, our water supplies are affected to some degree, through temporary or long term disruption. Also, temporary or long term conditions and circumstances could compromise water supply quality or drinkability. The main reasons for The American Red Cross, FEMA and Homeland Security highly recommending and encouraging the use of water distillers over filters, is that the distillation process kills viruses, cysts, bacteria, parasites. It will also remove all toxins and chemicals, unlike filters. Survival Stills are a perfect choice, not only for purity issues, but also because most survival still drinking water purifiers can be operated using several different heat sources such as electric or gas stoves, camping stoves, survival wood burning or fuel cell stoves, campfires or barbeques. Regular electric powered water distillers would not function during power outages. In the aftermath of hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes, most municipal water supplies are usually contaminated by sewage and other hazardous substances. However, the survival still purifiers remove all substances such as chemicals and kill all biological hazards potentially found in water. What to look for in a survival still emergency water distiller: · The distiller should be constructed of stainless steel, especially the condensing chamber surfaces. · The condensing chamber should be enclosed and not exposed to the surrounding environment. · The condenser cooling chamber should be large enough to prevent the need to continuously dump and replace with cool water - the smaller the chamber, the more often it needs dumping. · Look for condensing coils made of stainless steel or inert high temperature silicone. What to avoid in a survival still emergency water distiller: · Choose a distiller that does not rely on a limited-sized water-filled condenser chamber. · Avoid condensing surfaces of aluminum or surfaces exposed to open air, making the condensed distilled water subject to contamination of all types. · Choose a pressured boiling chamber so as to increase the volume of steam produced, resulting in a larger quantity of distillate. · Avoid spending more money than necessary to provide an adequate volume of distilled water. · There are also "Do it Yourself" plans to build your own survival still available on the internet. In addition to superior quality of water processed through the distillation process, it is always guaranteed to be pure clean and healthy. Distilled water is the only water that is regulated to protect its integrity. It cannot be labeled distilled unless the source water was boiled, with the steam being collected, and condensed back into water again - hence killing all biological threats and both organic and inorganic contaminants. No filter is capable of accomplishing this and for that reason alone, Red Cross, FEMA and Homeland Security recommend the distillation process during a disaster or emergency.
