The Ancestry of the Deliverer (6:14-26) The text lays out the ancestry of Moses and Aaron. From Levi to Kohath to Amram to Aaron and Moses. Twice it is stated that these are the same Moses and Aaron so as to remove any doubt of their linage. So who cares? Often we are given the linage of the pivotal men in the Bible. I’m sure there are many reasons having to do with Jewish law and promises, but one reason is that this establishes these men as men, not folk heroes. Tracing the ancestry of these men brings them into focus as real, mortal, imperfect beings. These are not super men that appear, these are not mythical gods that descend from the heavens, these were babies, children, teenagers. They had to figure it out like us. They messed it up, they progressed, and sometimes they regressed. We need to know that God doesn’t choose the uber-men. Sometimes he blesses from birth, sometimes he raises up through adversity, sometimes he picks the wicked, but he always chooses real, fallible men and women to engage the world and execute his purposes.
