The Anniversary of the Monday Nite Jazz Jam @ Phil & Dereks Jazz - TopicsExpress

The Anniversary of the Monday Nite Jazz Jam @ Phil & Dereks Jazz Cafe As the Venues come and go, The Monday Nite Jazz Jam just keeps on rolling! During this time a couple of years ago we made a transition to our current location, Phil & Dereks Jazz Cafe. In October of 2011, Houstons Original Monday Nite Jazz Jam took a short hiatus as we changed venues to our then new location Phil & Dereks Restaurant and Wine Bar. Were Moving on Up, said George Jefferson , actually we celebrate our 3rd anniversary of the relocation to a great venue in the Upper Kirby area just off Westheimer, in River Oaks. We returned that week, November 21st 2011, Thanksgiving week, and what a way to give thanks but for the return of Houstons best live Jazz music tradition, The Original Monday Nite Jazz Jam!!! We returned with all of the aspects of a REAL Jazz Jam, (not an open mic), often the public and some musicians get the two twisted! An open mic is when you hire a band to play for anybody that comes thru the door that wants try their hand at doing music. .......But a real Jam session is when like musicians with like talents get together and have a good time performing music or Jammin together. No sign up list, none of this - I was here first, you simply get in where you fit in!!! I think thats what makes this show so hot, no rules, no regulations, nobodys hands tied, everybody having a good time! As one legendary Jazz musician stated, Jazz shouldnt have any mandates. Jazz is not supposed to be something thats required to sound like Jazz. For me, the word Jazz means, I dare you. The effort to break out of something is worth more than getting an A in syncopation. This music is dealing with the unexpected. No one really knows how to deal with the unexpected........ How do you rehearse for the unknown!!! Tenor Saxophonist Wayne Shorter This is the premise that we have followed since the inception of the Monday Nite Jazz Jam in the 1950s!!! With the rare and classic film footage, the hottest Jazz ensemble in the country, guest artists from around the world, and all of this set in an intimate atmosphere. We want to welcome you to a lively creole cottage complete with a big, southern, New Orleans front porch, stunning French doors and antique décor— all reminiscent of the glorious days in the French Quarters. The menu features Cajun Creole Cookin’ and this New Orleans style building sets the a great atmosphere for Jazz! In Texas, Monday Nite was the night that barbers, beauticians ....... waiters and musicians were off from work (it was known as Industry Nite) and they would all meet up to enjoy the hottest live music that this city had to offer. This musical jam session started in 1953 and has continued through out the decades, this is ...... A Houston Music Tradition and it continues!!! We are inviting all of our regular supporters and the newcomers as well to help us celebrate this our anniversary of Jazz and Jammin in River Oaks!!!
