{ The Apartment UpStairs} ( At The Red Balloon) Vivid memories of Material Girl by Madonna are lush and everlasting, as if it were only yesterday! I have specific memories of this song! My parents loved it and my Dad still talks about how great it was. Everyone thought she was beautiful in her Marilyn Monroe persona. My friend said it was different than all her other songs. We danced( a bunch of guys) to it at high school dance and yelled GUY! In place of every Girl word sung by Madonna. Once, friends and I cruised through McDonalds with it blaring on the car stereo. The best memory is playing it on the Jukebox at the Pizzeria and laughing with friends. I was ahead of my time( I even wore a Like A Virgin shirt to high school in 1985) , I embraced Madonna and as gay kid in small town , U.S.A. , I pushed the boundaries within the boundaries I had been given. Madonna was a mentor of sorts, telling girls , gays and straight teenage boys to be slutty...... but wait.....not really. It was all the opposite of what she sang about in her songs. She sang about rich guys but went with the poor dude. She married Sean Penn shortly after Material Girl ( in fact they met on the set of her Material Girl video.) She married for love and showed the world who she really was.
