The Archives of Grass Roots Democracy and Art The American - TopicsExpress

The Archives of Grass Roots Democracy and Art The American experiment is unusual in its emphasis on democracy, and the way this has been engineered into the artworld at times leaves our counterparts in Europe and Asia scratching their heads. Is Glass Secessionism democratic? To a large degree, I think it is. We are in the process of socially rewriting the history of glass from the GS point of view, and also defining the aesthetic and ethics of GS. Even the essays published against GS are illustrative of democracy in action, because we have received and discussed those essays as a group. For me as a curator, a question remains as to how to democratically curate an exhibition, typically done hierarchically and non-democratically, and produce an exhibition that is valid and interesting. I like the cartoon a lot. You can replace the fellow at the podium with anything: our belief in a particular aesthetic, in authenticity, in Glass Secessionism. But if the group leaves, the structure falls. Is that how we want our art world to work? And if so, how in detail does it work?
