The Ash Sessions will be turning 1 tomorrow, and we are celebrating with an all-Cohen covers affair. Because The Ash Sessions loves Leonard Cohen in every way, and because he once said that “poetry is just the evidence of life; if your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash” and that sounds good to…well, anyone really, and so the Ash Sessions is named after that and, with the support of Nick’s Coffee Company, The Ash Sessions has been dropping ash and duende on the streets of Ranelagh for a year now, and hell, that is something worth celebrating. And celebrate we shall – tomorrow, starting at 2pm. But, until then, just wanted to take a moment and list all the lovely things that have happened since The Ash Sessions held its very first gathering, on October 20, 2012. There have been: 8 sessions, including one on the dark sounds of duende, guest curated by Greg Kirkorian; two chalkboard poetry series (Ash Wednesday and Black, Strong, and Sweet poetry series); a two-part series looking at the masculine and feminine energy in poetry and music (Between Ribs and Figs Music and Poetry Series); and, there has been a lovely collaboration between The Ash Sessions and Bare Hands Poetry – together, we ‘Bared Our Ashes” during the 10 Days in Dublin festival, and then we bared them again, as part of the Ranelagh Arts festival, for Culture Night 2013. And for all of these lovely events, some astounding musical and poetic talent, including: Sean Urell, Philip Lynch, Sara O’Loughlin, Andre K’Por, Mongoose, Anne Tannam, Sean Ruane, Davy Lyons, Aidan Fitzmaurice, Dermot Carmody, Laura Cleary, Daniel Ryan, Tom Rowley, Erin Fornoff, Greg Kirkorian, Kerrie O’Brien, Patrick Chapman, Allison Sleator, Garret Baker, Anothony Colclough, Colm Keegan, Aidan Murphy, Ria Czerniak, Stephen Murray, Fiona Bolger, Mike Igoe, Orla Martin, Sinead White, Eamon Murphy McGuinness, Cris Bradley, Alan Tully, Jessica Maybury, Dave Lordan, Sweeney Lee, Sharon Murphy, John Cummins, Sarah Maria Griffin, Stephen James Smith, Gabriel Rosenstock, Jessica Traynor, Turlach O’Brien, Elizabeth Reapy, Andy Apples, Al Keough, Conor Deegan, The Young Folk, Sarah Elaine, Kate Dempsey, I am Niamh, Elaine Feeney, Elayne Harrington (Temper-Mental MissElayneous), HypnoPuppet, Naoise Roo, Brad Geyer, The Ragmen, Noel Sweeney, Gavin Mee, Lenin and Lionel, Johnny Murphy, Paul Timoney, Red Sail, Abby Oliviera, Idiot Songs, Stephen Clare, Kurtis Murphy, Oisin McKenna, Fia Rua, Cal Doyle, Carlhinos Cruz, Maurice Devitt, Mark Granier, Kit Fryatt, Niamh MacAlister, Kevin Reid, Hayden Westfield-Bell, Afric McGlinchey, and, last but not least, the teller of Ranelagh-related literary tales, Ronan Sheehan. By all accounts, tomorrow should be a very lovely afternoon indeed. There will be baklava, and Nick’s coffee. There will also be weather so please, dress for it, all kinds of it. There will duende. Lots of it. And Cohen. And ash. Lots and lots and heaps of ash. So come and enjoy it along with everyone else who will be there (if for nothing more than the fact that you would be doing the person next to you a favour – there is more body heat in numbers). As for what words to end on, I give those to poet Cal Doyle who tweeted the following a couple of days ago: ‘The Ash Sessions. Kicking Ash since naught-twelve”. See you tomorrow friends, and thank you all very much for making us a year old tomorrow. Much love Dimitra, The Ash Sessions. https://facebook/events/527607020654634/
