The Assembly of First Nations issued a statement Friday regarding the education deal struck by former National Chief Shawn Atleo and Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Statement on Federal Education Legislation Document Sept 12, 2014 The AFN had no knowledge of any kind of document signed by the former National Chief and the federal government. Under the AFN Charter, a National Chief has “no inherent political authority” to make agreements with government on behalf of the AFN or First Nations. The federal government knows this - or should know it - and, as such, the federal government should quit trying to claim it has or had any kind of “agreement” with AFN. First Nations overwhelmingly rejected Bill C-33 and that represents the position of First Nations and the Assembly of First Nations. First Nations control of First Nations education remains a priority for First Nations and the AFN and we are calling on the government to withdraw Bill C-33 and engage with First Nations on an honourable approach that respects our diversity, our rights and our Treaties. First Nations are the youngest, fastest growing population in the country and action on First Nations education will benefit all of Canada. National Chief Ghislain Picard Assembly of First Nations
