The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Zone 4, Michael Zuokumor, has charged Police Commissioners under his zone to wake up to their responsibilities of protecting lives and property. The Zone, which comprises of Benue, Nassarawa and Plateau States, has been bedeviled by violent communal clashes. Mr. Zuokumor gave the charge in Jos on Friday, at the Plateau State Police Command, during a routine visit to commands under his zone. Commenting on the increased insecurity within the states, the police chief said efforts were on in ensuring that the incessant killing of innocent people was curtailed. “The job of a policeman is equal to that of an angel; even when you are asleep, the policeman is out there watching over you,” he said. He pledged to tackle the cases of cattle rustling within the zone, which he identified as one of the main causes of the clashes, especially among communities in Plateau State. According to him, there had been relative peace within the zone following new strategies taken by security agents, patrolling day and night, in and around crisis ridden areas. Mr. Zuokumor appealed to residents of the states to live peacefully and avoid clashes. The violence within the zone, in the past eight years, has led to countless deaths and loss of property without the arrest or conviction of suspected perpetrators. Currently, more than 7000 refugees who fled communities in Obi Local Government Area of Nassarawa, as a result of the violence, have been camped in Quanpan Local Government Area of Southern Plateau State. The Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, on Thursday donated relief materials worth N20 million to the victims who have taken refuge in 6 camps within Quanpan.
