The Associated Press ran a story a couple of days ago about the “complex story” behind the ad that our story is featured in. You can click on the link to read it. I’ll admit that for a few days, I’ve been in a bit of a funk about the article. It’s not that I’m ashamed of my past, nor do I ever try to hide it. Its victory. Sometimes, though, I just get tired of having to talk about it as it relates to Muna’s abduction. It was used to justify the unjustifiable. I could tell within a few seconds when the reporter called me last week where the directions of the questions were going. I dont blame him. I believe he wrote a well done story about several aspects of this multifaceted miracle. What Im dismayed about more is that I also know where the prompt to ‘dig deeper’ into my words on the commercial came from. As a journalist, a political scientist and one who has managed a few political campaigns, I know that this, the most closely-watched, high-stakes election in the nation, would prompt a few detractors who would try to shift the focus off of the miracle in an attempt to discredit me and the one who stood up for me. I also was concerned because I didn’t want to harm iSTAND Parent Network, the coalition of parents and supporters of which I am member, to be maligned and distracted from our important work to end international child abduction. I shared my concern on our weekly conference call on Wednesday, the day the story came out. They all reassured me that it was all good. My warriormamma Alissa text me again last night with true perspective. I see this story differently now, because what may have been meant for harm, God meant for so much good! As I now see it: *Muna is home, so….. :-) *Our miracle has the potential for millions of people to know about it because AP content goes to newspaper, television, radio and websites around the WORLD. *These same potential millions can witness what it means to persevere, to overcome and not let fear of what people might say stop you from fighting for what’s most important. *It shows that there is value in being honest and straightforward even about the most painful details because the truth needs no defense. *It demonstrates how a person in a position of great power can act with full knowledge of past mistakes because it is the right thing to do. I believe that is an important message not just for those in recovery, but in general. *Never judge a book by its cover. My senator dug in with me over two years, two governments and two nations. I didnt know him like that, but I do now. *It gives my fellow parents and iSTAND Parent Network hope and legitimacy and (I hope) reminds them that love for our children wins. Love always wins. *And, of course, it shows that a Great and Mighty God can move nations, governments and media to be glorified! #glory! #fellowshipoftheunashamed bigstory.ap.org/article/04c0bc051e354ef487d4990c0ef68bd2/behind-mcconnell-ad-ky-womans-complex-story
